Residential Training Luka the Hungarian Vizsla
Luka the six month old Hungarian Vizsla went home to Essex yesterday after her residential training. Luka’s owner, Iain, was working away so rather than place her in boarding kennels, he decided to research training options. Distance was not an issue; what he required was someone who knew how to work with the breed and who was able to train his precious girl. Iain had sent Luka for an overnight stay with another trainer who said he wouldn’t have her as she was too demanding. This is something I know too well, nicknamed velcro dogs, the Hungarian Vizsla can be perceived as requiring a lot of attention because of their attachment to their owners. (Read more about so called velcro dogs on my Dog Training 4u blog.) After one conversation with me, Iain knew that Tessleymoor Gundogs was the place for Luka and booked her in.
As a young dog, what Luka needed was a good foundation to teach her manners. She had a tendency to get over excited and needed to be build her focus. This involved regular work during her residential on her sit, stay, lead walking and recall. Her training has gone really well and her focus has massively improved.
Ian travelled up from Essex for the handover training and found a transformed dog. Luka sat quietly near Iain whilst I walked away, staying steady despite the distraction of being reunited with Iain. She then sat on her own and produced an excellent recall to me, running straight past her owner. By demonstrating these abilities at the handover, I could show Iain what can be achieved with consistent training. When dogs return home from their residential training, it’s important that the progress they have made continues, with owners using the techniques I pass on to from a strong bond with their dog.
