Group Gundog Training Classes.
Today was the second week of the new 2013 group gundog training session which has a great mix of breeds and abilities. I run group training sessions in order to assist clients in working their dogs around other dogs, as gundog training is often a solitude experience. this is particularly important for retrieval work as especially with retrieving. Ensuring steadiness from your dog to a thrown dummy whilst other dogs retrieve can be challenging and often results in our dogs running in on the retrieves.
It is vital to remember that all dogs working on a shoot will be trained in basic obedience, which will include heel work on and off lead, recall and waiting whilst other dogs are around. Basic obedience forms part of the training during the group gundog sessions and many handlers are already feeling more confident. The focus of today’s training session was recapping on previous training whilst concentrating on steadiness, retrieval and deliverance of thrown dummies. Otis, the Labradoodle will never go out on a shoot however he has shown some fantastic improvement with retrieval work even though this has always been a problem area for him and his handler.
It has been rewarding to see the progress that has been made after only 1 week but many problems have also been highlighted as many of the dogs and handlers are used to working individually.
Group gundog training classes are open to anyone wanting to train their dogs to a working standard. If you are interested in joining one of the groups then please contact me.
