Gundog Training Assessment with Donald the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Donald the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever attended his first gundog training lesson today. Lesley has previously trained Pointers for obedience and agility, but has no gundog experience. Apart from a few lessons with the breeder in Norfolk Lesley has trained on her own with little guidance. Today’s assessment allowed me to see the level Donald and Lesley are at, to formulate a training programme.

Donald is certainly keen to retrieve, whilst his selective hearing to whistle commands need sharpening. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever need lots of physical and mental stimulation to ensure they are happy. Like any working dog it’s important to train to the breed ability even if you will never work them in the shooting field. Donald will never work in the field as he’s gun shy but that doesn’t stop Lesley and Donald enjoying some structure training.
