Gundog Training Monty and Winston the German Shorthaired Pointers
Monty and Winston the German Shorthaired Pointers are 12 month old brothers. Monty and Winston’s owners contacted me after they’d jump a boundary fence into a neighbouring field of sheep. Being a responsible owner, he contacted the farmer and whilst they hadn’t chased sheep, they did spook and being in lamb it was important the farmer was aware. As with many owners that are fortunate to own land, training tends to be a bare minimum. Allowing both dogs to range a distance whilst walking had created a strong independency and lack of control off the lead. On the lead they pulled excessively which was also making walking to heel un-pleasurable.
Today was their second lesson and I could certainly see a significant improvement in their behaviour. I’ve insisted that both dogs are trained on the lead at present until they arrive for some residential gundog training in April to help build a stronger bond and new command structure.
With consistency both dogs will be able to be off the lead and controlled on their land.
