Labrador Puppy Gundog Training with Logan
Logan is 13 weeks old. This is the first dog for his owners and they had been waiting to come and see me for Labrador puppy training. Unfortunately, while waiting they had not been doing the foundational training necessary from eight weeks and Logan is already headstrong and dominant. He is a well bred Drakeshead Labrador and shows signs of being a big dog, even more reason not to allow him on the furniture, to jump up, to play tug-of-war or to sleep in the bedroom.
I changed Logan’s lead to a slip lead that controls rather than restrains. He was not happy with this, becoming argumentative and stubborn. He did make progress throughout the lesson and his owners have gone away with lots of positives to implement at home.
This is such a crucial stage in a dog’s life. I demonstrated with my 12 week old Springer Spaniel puppy, Islay, who will walk off lead, understands corrections with yes and no and has recall. Ok, this is my job but with consistent training and positive reinforcement from the moment you bring your puppy home, a lot can be achieved in these early days.
