When to start training with a dummy launcher
When is a good time to start training your working dog to the sound of the gun, dummer launcher and starting pistol?
There is no text book rule that says when you should introduce your dogs to the sound of firing. Every dog is different in character and development. All my dogs are introduced to loud noises from an early age as with my job I’m always using shotguns, launchers and starting pistols. If your dog’s very timid, it’s a good idea to acclimatise them from a distance, maybe by attending a clay shooting ground. Let them hear the guns without getting too close, then slowly reduce the distance to build your dog’s confidence. Attending a training lesson with a professional trainer is also a good idea. They will be able to observe and advise when is the right time to work with loud noises.
Last Friday, Islay my 10 month old Springer Spaniel attended a shoot. Whilst I was shooting she stayed in the vehicle to get her used to the constant noise. Whilst she’s been around shotguns, having multiple shots fired can be daunting. Since then I’ve daily used the dummy launcher, ensuring that every bang results in a positive outcome.
We need to remember that any experience whilst training needs to be a positive one.
