Spring Gundog Training
The longer days and lighter nights can only mean one thing – there’s more time for spring gundog training. Of course this means it’s also peak training season for me, which explains why the blog has been a little quiet over the last month.
So why is spring training so popular? Well, there’s lots of new puppiesĀ about and the owners are wanting to make a good start with their young dogs. If you are planning to work your dog, it’s essential to understand what you are looking to achieve. Using my training method, The Tessleymoor Way, is a great place to start. The bond you lay down now with your new dog will be a great foundation to build on over the coming months.
Spring Refresh
The other reason spring is so busy is the return of many dogs that I have trained who need a little refresher work. They have been busy on shoots over the autumn and winter months. Now they have had a little downtime and they need get them back on track. During the hunting season, bad habits can creep in, with little time to work on correcting them. Spring is the perfect time to give all your dogs a quick behavioural course to eradicate any errors. Sometimes a residential stay with me is what’s needed. Dedicated daily training on areas of weakness will stimulate the dog and bring them up to the standard you need.
It’s exactly four months until the start of the new season, the Glorious Twelfth. With the longer days and lighter nights, there is no excuse for not devoting your time to spring gundog training. The only way to guarantee your dogs will be ready is to work with them now. Brush up on behaviour you have let slip and you’ll both be all set for the late summer months.
