Cold game pre-shoot group training

labrador retrieving a canada goose shooting season

Yesterday’s lesson with two client was thoroughly enjoyable. The aim of the pre-shoot group training was to work on steadiness around multiple dogs for both my clients as they are destined for the 2020 shoot field.

We worked Springer Spaniels and Labradors. We were focusing on ensuring each dog wasn’t trigger happy to another handler’s commands, whistles or body signals when sending and controlling their dogs in the field. Training your dog is normally a solitary process. Whilst clients may put the time in training, they often don’t have the luxury of other dogs/handlers to train around. During all my lessons I can use my dogs to help with steadiness. Having another dog that’s over keen can and does take my client’s dogs enthusiasm to a higher level of unsteadiness.

Having shot a large Canada Goose on Saturday, we were fortunate to have the opportunity to use such a large bird. It was interesting to see if each dog was able to carry up to 15kg. My Fern and my client’s dog Cooper managed it. Islay’s brother Snipe tried with all his might but he wasn’t able to carry it.

This kind of training is essential in preparing for the season ahead.
