Lulled Into A False Sense Of Security

I have been working with Lucy and her Springer Spaniel puppy, Murphy. At the first lesson, I remarked how calm and subdued he was. Lucy said he was such an easy dog and I warned her not to get lulled into a false sense of security. Sure enough, a few months later, Murphy is full of all the male Springer character traits and is quite a handful. Don’t ever think you are in for an easy ride with these kind of breeds.

Playtime for Murphy

Unfortunately, Lucy has inadvertently created a habitual problem with Murphy. He has been allowed out in the garden to run around and not kept close to her. Murphy has created a little game for himself of chasing the leaves as they fall off the trees. As a consequence, he cannot now be let of the lead as he will not come back. Until autumn has passed, he will want to be off free hunting.

This example just shows how important it is to be consistent with your dog training, in the house, the garden and beyond. If you allow your dog to facilitate his own playtime, this is the result.
