A dog is for life, not just for lockdown
I am getting an increasing number of calls from new dog owners who are questioning their decision. One lady this week has found her new puppy is reacting to her cats and behaving in a domineering manner. Her decision has been to return to the puppy to the breeder, aged just 14 weeks. A dog is for life – that’s all their life, not just when they are a cute, tiny puppy.
While this is an extreme example, it is becoming relatively common for owners of young dogs aged between 6 – 12 months to consider re-homing. As I have warned throughout the pandemic, dog ownership should not be entered into lightly. Now life is getting back to normal, people are finding their dog an inconvenience. A lack of foundational training has resulted in many poorly behaved young dogs. They lack the basic good behaviour needed to make owning a dog enjoyable.
Rescue Dogs
Dog charities throughout the UK have noted a rise in abandoned puppies during 2021. Dog ownership is a huge responsibility and unfortunately, many people have entered into it with a short-term mentality. If you have been waiting until prices come down to get a dog, now may be the time to consider taking a rescue but only if you have the time to devote to them.
