A New Puppy Is Not Your Old Dog

When choosing a new puppy or dog, always think carefully before you buy or visit the rescue centre. Perhaps you are looking for a new dog after losing a faithful companion. Remember that your situation when you first had that dog was different to now. You were certainly younger, perhaps fitter and had a home more suited to a puppy. The last few years of your previous dog’s life may have been easy. As your dog was getting older, they certainly wouldn’t have required as much attention, walking and training. So the sudden shock of a new puppy or dog arriving home is a massive change and one that can throw you off guard.

Last night was a classic example of an owner that’s previously had a Dalmatian and decided that they would buy a new one. Not only are Dalmatians a breed that require lots of exercise, they are also challenging with a strong character. Imagine being 79 years of age and having a seven month Dalmatian that’s out of control. Well that’s exactly what’s happening here. You are probably asking why they got the puppy. This is the question I asked myself and one I put to the owners. There are many reasons why but even with all the reasoning, owning a breed like this at any age is one that should be seriously considered.

As they are wanting to keep their girl they’ve tasked me to help with residential training so all the family can be involved when she arrives home. A reset of her behaviour is needed to establish new structure and boundaries.

Before you buy or rescue a dog, please seriously consider the consequences. Are you ready to start the journey again?
