Are You Making The Right Choice?

It’s been a sad week in my dog training. I have been asked my professional opinion on the future of two dangerous dogs. Unfortunately, I have had to agree with other professional advice they have been given, that the animals should be destroyed.

Coincidentally, both dogs are German Shepherds, although the circumstances could apply to so many breeds. One dog is 15 months old, the other 18 months old. Both dogs were bought during the rush for puppies in the pandemic. Consequently, not enough questions were asked of the breeders. It may be that the parents were aggressive and perhaps used as guard dogs. It is certainly true that these young dogs have not received the appropriate training for their breed characteristics. One of the dogs could only be walked after dark, avoiding the possibility of encountering other dogs. The problem with that is, you can never rule out every eventuality and one night it did meet and attack another dog.

Choosing The Right Dog

With any dog purchase but especially with large or aggressive breeds, you have to ask yourself, am I making the right choice? For you, for your family, your neighbourhood – are you prepared for the commitment this involves? It is possible to own and enjoy one of these breeds but you have to put the hours of consistent training in. Sadly, just the week there has been a tragic case of a baby girl killed by the family dog. The last thing we need is more dangerous dogs.

So, as I always say, think before you buy. Never buy a puppy without researching the breeder. If you have the slightest query about the litter, walk away. If the breeder tries to pressure you for a quick sale, walk away. When you do find a good litter, set out a training programme for you and your family members and use a reputable dog trainer. Only than will you ensure you have a safe dog that will be able to live a long and happy life with you.
