Your Questions Answered: Why Did You Become A Gundog Trainer?

I have recently been interviewed by a client as part of their studies. The Q&A session covered many questions I am frequently asked and so I’ll be posting the answers over the next few weeks here on the blog.

Why Did You Become A Gundog Trainer?

I started training dogs when I was 16 years old and I started running training classes around that time too. I liked looking after dogs, I liked the discipline and the structure but back then, there was no dog training industry. There was a lady on the tv called Barbara Woodhouse, that was it. There was not as many dogs around and discipline was old school – whack your dog on the nose with a rolled up newspaper or a slipper. You didn’t see badly behaved dogs. So I pursued other careers until about 15 years ago, when I went into gundog training full time. It gives me satisfaction to see a dog well-trained with a good bond and a good structure. It is hard work – training the people is hard work – they either listen or they don’t.
