Beware of Bluebells

I am seeing lots of pictures of dog owners walking in bluebell woods. While this makes a very pretty stroll, it’s not the best idea for your dog. Some spring flowers and bulbs are harmful to dogs, including daffodils and tulips. Bluebell plants and bulbs contain scillarens, chemicals that reduce the heart rate. This can cause vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and disorientation in dogs. Bluebells can even be deadly in large amounts.

If your regular route is through a bluebell wood, keep a close eye on your dog to make sure they don’t eat any part of the plant. Ideally, your dog won’t be snacking on any flowers, either in your garden or out on a walk but if they are prone to do this, avoid bluebell woods altogether.
