Cracking Down On Dog Thieves

As you will probably be aware, the rates of dog theft are now alarmingly high. The demand for puppies during lockdown has seen organised crime gangs switch from dealing in drugs to dealing in dogs. It might seem unbelievable but with a single puppy now worth many thousands of pounds, both young dogs and dogs for breeding are at a premium. Dog thieves will be active in your area. It’s important to be super vigilant, both around your own property and when out with your dogs.

Working dog breeds are being particularly targeted by criminals. If you dog is kennelled outside, you need to up your security. I have recently invested many thousands of pounds in a state of the art security system around my property to protect my dogs. If you are looking to buy a dog, check and check again where the dog is coming from. Do not buy a puppy unless it has proper paperwork and has been seen with the mother. If in any doubt, walk away.

The Countryside Alliance has been very proactive in campaigning on this issue. This includes a call for pet theft to be recognised as a separate offence, carrying a two year jail sentence. You can read more about the Countryside Alliance campaign to protect our dogs here.
