Is Crate Training Right For My Dog?
I have been blogging about the German Wirehaired Pointers I have had in residence. They are both back home with their owners now and making very good progress.
Mollie’s owner is following the fully structured routined I sent home with her to the letter. I always supply this detailed do’s and dont’s list but it is not always used. By following these instruction, including use of a crate, they have a calm and compliant dog. There is no sign of the aggressive GWP that arrived with me for training.
An additional service I have been able to offer Mollie’s owners is a virtual follow up lesson. Many people travel long distances to use my residential training. Rather than travelling all the way back to me for the follow up lesson, we were able to do this as a virtual lesson. I am sure this is going to be a popular addition to my residential packages. Mollie’s owners also had a virtual lesson while she was in residence with me. Her behaviour was so bad in the home that I knew changes had to be made in her environment before she returned. I was able to see around the house and identify adaptations they could make that would compliment the training I was giving her.
Crate Training Recommended by Vets
Otto is also doing very well. Once again the owners are following my rules and routine. On a visit to the vet, they commented on how well behaved Otto was. The owners explained about his residential stay and how I had insisted on crate training when he got home. The vet was extremely impressed and said he wished more people would use crate training for their dogs as it is such an effective training tool.
Both these dogs are displaying a complete change of behaviour. Yes they have had access to daily 1-2-1 training with me over a number of weeks. Also, the owners have stuck to the routine I have given, including using a crate. It is by the far the best way to train your dog and can be introduced at any time – both these GWPs are mature dogs.
