Dogs On Leads Around Sheep – Your Annual Reminder

It’s hard for me to believe that every year I have to remind people to keep their dogs on leads around sheep. You’d think it would be common sense but no. Over the last few weeks my phone has been ringing with people who say, can I help because their dog has chased sheep. Some people have called after having a run in with a farmer because their dog is not on a lead.

I have always seen this as animal welfare issue – both for the sheep and the dog. Now, with my farm, I can see the financial implications too. I might have a sheep that is worth £100. However, when in lamb with twins, she is potentially worth £250 for the three sheep I will have. No wonder farmers get so angry. In the worse case scenario, a farmer is within their rights to shoot a dog that is worrying their sheep, as happened in this disturbing article.

As the police officer on this case commented – don’t just rely on your lead. Make sure your dog has excellent recall. Then, even if for some reason you drop the lead, they will still come back to you. Better still, especially during lambing season, walk your dog away from fields containing sheep. They will allow you to enjoy a relaxing walk while leaving the livestock in peace.
