Family Dog Training
So what happens when you’ve got the kids all weekend and you have dog training too? Simple, you bring the kids along and make it family dog training. Just this weekend I was scheduled to see Paul with his Labrador, Drake. They have trained with me before but Paul rang to say he would have his seven year old daughter, Phoebe with him so could he rearrange. I told him to bring Phoebe along and she loved the lesson.
It’s so important to train the whole family with a family dog. It’s the best way to ensure consistency of commands and expectations. The dog is part of your household and everyone’s responsibility. Instead of making the training ‘dad’s thing’ or ‘mum’s thing’, get the kids involved.
I have worked in education settings in the past and have a lot of experience of making lessons fun and interesting. Often I find that the kids pick up on thing much faster than the parents and that the dogs are very eager to please their young handlers. Never hesitate to bring your children along to a lesson with me – I guarantee fresh air, focus and fun.
