As Featured in Farmers Guardian: My Journey to Farming at 50

In this column, sheep farmer Damian Barson talks about starting his career later in life – and encourages people to think about what previous jobs can bring to the table.
‘Becoming a first-generation farmer at 50 was daunting’
When I began my farming journey in September 2021, I had none of the advantages that come with a generational farming background. I had to start from scratch with no experience, no guidance, and no established network to rely on.
Starting as a first-generation farmer at 50 was daunting. While young farmers often benefit from support networks like the National Federation of Young Farmers’ clubs, there is little dedicated assistance for older individuals stepping into farming later in life.
For first-generation farmers over 30, getting started can feel isolating. Unless you’re willing to go out, learn on the job, ask questions, and do extensive research, there are few structured resources available.
High and Lows
It has been a learning curve, and I made mistakes, learned by doing, watched YouTube tutorials and connected with others through social media, which allowed me to engage with the community and share experiences. Farming is full of highs and lows, and it is important to showcase both.
Regardless of age, farming is a career that demands commitment, resilience and a willingness to learn.
One of my proudest moments came in 2023 when I was named a finalist in the British farming awards for the new entrance category, just two years after starting my farming journey. It proves that no matter what your age, background or level of experience is, if you have passion and determination, you can achieve anything in farming.
Those entering farming later in life often bring financial stability, transferable skills and fresh perspectives. Life experience fosters adaptability, and many of us come into farming with a strong work ethic, financial resources and a deep determination to succeed.
Farming needs people of all ages and backgrounds – it is not an easy career, but it is rewarding one.
