Spring Is In The Air
It’s my first spring on my farm and I am loving it. The weather is warming up so the grass is starting to grow. This is great for the sheep, although I will need to supplement their feed for quite a while yet. The days are longer so I have more time to get tasks completed. My lambs will start arriving anytime now, another sign that spring is in the air.
The animals are certainly ready for a change of seasons. It’s been a long winter and being on wet ground can cause welfare issues. I’ve posted a video about goat hoof trimming on the Tessleymoor Farm YouTube channel. The goats have had laminitis – a common problem for animals with hooves. As a first time farmer, I will admit I wasn’t aware of the problems goats can have with their feet. I’ve had to work hard and spend time and money to remedy the situation.
All but a couple of the goats are looking more comfortable now. As a result, I’ve let them out into the garden, where the ground is firmer and there is also some hardstanding. They are much happier being outside, bouncy about and head butting each other. Goats being goats, they took the opportunity of being so close to the house to come and visit us in the kitchen.
I will be mating these goats in May and look forward to having some kids around the farm. With the good weather forecast to remain for a while now, it’s looking to be the start of a great week.
