Gundog Training assessment with Rosa the Portuguese Pointer

Today I met Rosa the Portuguese Pointer who’s been imported into England 4 weeks ago and is now 16 week old.  Helga who owns Rosa has 2 other Portuguese Pointers and German Pointers, totalling 9 dogs.  Helga grouse counts with her other dogs but she’d like to train Rosa to be a full HPR dog, working in the shooting field retrieving as well as hunting and pointing.  The purspose of todays lessons was to meet and chat about Helga’s experience and how we instil the correct basics for her new addition.

Helga is the families 3rd generation owning Pointers and throughout her life she’s always been involved with dogs, running kennels and owning/training her own dog.  With the Portuguese Pointer breed now being recognised by the kennel club and with only 51 registered in the UK, Helga’s looking to set up a club and increase the popularity of the breed.  The nature of the dogs will certainly attractive many people.  This is my first experience of seeing this wonderful breed and I’d definitely own one.
