GUNDOG TRAINING SHOOT DAY
Working a gundog in the field for the first time can be a daunting experience and even as veterans we need to refresh our dogs’ training before the new season. Many people spend months training their working dogs to a level ready for a shoot or field trials. Much of this training is a solitary experience, which can create problems when out working with the dogs as they may choose to run in on retrieves, drop short or hard mouth. Training a working dog and being able to take it into the field should be a rewarding experience but does require patience and a methodical approach.
A gundog training shoot day on my farm in rural Lancashire is an ideal training environment for your gundog. These days are ideal for gundogs that have already learnt the basic skills and also for refresher trainer for working dogs. The Tessleymoor Farm has plenty of live game and also duck flighting ponds. Dependent on the time of year and the species available, I am able to offer a simulated shoot experience. This will help your dog:
- be ready to hunt and find game on a shoot day
- become steady to flush
- retrieve shoot game to hand
- have the experience of being shot over
- practice water retrieves
Rather than spending thousands on a shoot day, only to have your dog let you down, let them practice in simulated environment first. This is a facility very few dog trainers can offer. Gundog training shoot days are suitable for any handlers, from those taking their dog out on their first shoot season through to experienced field trialers who want to move their gundog training to the next level.

The session was both fun and constructive and I think we have all taken a lot from it
