Good Progress with Jerry The Springer Spaniel
I’ve spent a lot of time with Jerry the Springer Spaniel. This young dog has been for one-to-one lessons, he’s had a residential stay with me and is now following up with more one-to-one lessons. He is a headstrong and wilful boy but we have made so much progress with him. The key with a dog like Jerry is to harness his breed mentality. By keeping him stimulated, the owners will get the best out of him.
We have now reached the stage with Jerry where he can be off the lead around my dogs without being distracted. His recall is good enough for the owners to be confident in letting him off the lead when they are out. At the most recent lesson, we introduced some retrieves and delivery to hand. While this needs polish, it’s great progress for him and as a result, the owners can see a dog they can take out in public, who wants to engage and interact with them.
Keep Going With Your Training
These owners have gone for a comprehensive training programme. With many gundogs, this is the best course of action. Training a Springer Spaniel like Jerry takes times. The owners know I am available to help between lessons to keep them on the right track. There is never a reason to despair with your dog. Always turn a negative into a positive. Call your trainer, reset and keep going.
