No Such Thing As A Velcro Dog

I currently have Pablo the Hungarian Vizsla in residence with me. Most dogs take a maximum of 24 hours to settle into my kennels and get used to me. Pablo took a week. The reason for this is that his owners have treated him like a so called ‘velcro dog’. They have overloved him to the degree that he is incredibly anxious. It’s sad to see a beautiful dog like this scared of his own shadow.

The owners have tried to train Pablo through a mixture of books, videos and word of mouth. The result is a mess. The dog has no foundational training and there is a lot of work to do to make him happy, confident and obedient. The owners live some distance from my kennels so we have worked out a programme of virtual and residential training to get Pablo back on track.

Many HPR owners tell me that they have velcro dogs who need lots of love and to be by their side all the time. You have to build your bond with your dog in the right way – love them but don’t smother them. Give them the structure they need to enjoy their life with you. This is what I will be doing with Pablo over the next few weeks.
