Have A Happy & Safe Christmas With Your Dog
We know that Christmas is going to be a little different this year. Your house may not be as busy as usual but it’s likely that your routine will change for a few days. I wish all my clients a very Happy Christmas – and that includes your dogs. So what’s the best way to to have a merry and safe Christmas with your dog?
Three things to remember
First of all – don’t forget your dog! That might seem impossible but with visitors in the house, lots of cooking and excitement, your dog can be neglected. Make sure they have their regular exercise at the usual times. Give them a quiet space to hide away in so that they can escape the party. If they are not used to young children or to visitors, make sure they don’t become overwhelmed or overtired. This is especially important for all those new dog owners out there. If it’s puppy’s first Christmas, they will need to be kept calm and in their routine.
The next thing is to watch the floor. When presents are opened, all kinds of debris gets left on the floor. Watch for plastic ties, bits of tissue paper, pieces of toys. If you dog is given a toy with a squeak, remove this so they don’t chew through and swallow it. Don’t leave chocolates lying around and never give your dog a turkey bone to chew on. These could all cause serious harm for your dog and the last thing you want is a trip to the emergency vets.
Lastly, keep the dog out of the kitchen when you are cooking. This is to protect them and you. If you trip over them with a boiling pan or hot fat, you could both be seriously hurt. It’s also not fair on them to be surrounded by the smells of Christmas dinner – maybe take them out for some fresh air while someone else does the cooking.
A dog is for Christmas
The saying a dog is for life, not just for Christmas is so true but it’s also the case that a dog is for Christmas. Don’t ignore them because you’re busy with something else. Make them part of your day. Keep your household calm and have a safe Christmas with your dog – then I can look forward to seeing you both in the new year.
