Seven Days With Skye

pentir lassie border collie

The last week has been a whirlwind. Since I purchased Pentir Lassie (now known as Skye) for a record price at Skipton Auction, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing. She has great little pup with an incredible pedigree, as you can see from my previous blog. The media interest has stretched as far as Australia. Nearer to home I’ve been in national newspapers and farming magazines, plus appearing on BBC TV and radio.

She might have a princess price tag but all my dogs are trained in exactly the same way – The Tessleymoor Way. This means structure from day one. Normally, with new pups I kennel them in my secure and monitored indoor kennels. I then gradually transition them to the outdoor kennels during the day. With the media interest around Skye, I decided to keep her very close and have crated her in my kitchen. This doesn’t mean she gets any more attention. I am still able to work and move around at normal and she knows not to expect interaction.

Working From Home With A Puppy

As a result, she is sleeping through the night and clean in the morning, both in the crate and in the house when she is let out. She knows not to come near when I am working or cooking and lies at a distance where she can visual me. With so many people working from home at the moment, this is just what you want from your dogs. This morning, I made a bacon sandwich; she trotted over when I sat down to eat it but with a click of my fingers, she went back and laid down at some distance from me.

No one wants an attention seeking, whining dog. Unfortunately, many people set themselves up to fail by giving too much attention to their puppies. Skye has plenty of interaction and walks outside with me at the correct times and at other times, she sleeps in her crate.

I’m looking forward to keeping you up-to-date with her progress as the weeks go by.
