Gundog Training a Young Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer

gundog training Slovakian rough haired pointer

I always like to see new breeds of gundog and this week I met a Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer. This is a new HPR breed that was only developed in the 1950’s – a cross between a German Wire Haired Pointer and a Weimaraner. They were not seen outside of Czechoslovakia until the split of this country in the 1990’s. The Slovakian Rough Haired Pointer requires lots of exercise; it’s bred to hunt and loves to be outside. Pointer’s are a sensitive breed and respond well to consistent and kind training. As with all working dogs, they have to be stimulated and appropriately trained in order to have a dog that is enjoyable to be around.

Jobi the owner is a falconer. He previously had a GSP that came to him fully trained, which he worked with his hawks. Rosie is seven months old and already showing signs of being tricky to train. She has been allowed to much freedom and allowed to roam. Without foundational training, she will not have the bond she needs with Jobi to be a good working dog.

I’m looking forward to having Rosie in for residential training soon, using The Tessleymoor Way to create a good basis from which to train her up.
