Unscrupulous Puppy Breeders

buying a new puppy Coronavirus

I have been blogging extensively about what I see as the scandal in dog breeding. This has come about as a result of demand for puppies during lockdown and the crisis seems no where near resolving itself. Just the week I spoke to someone who had agreed to pay £1400 for a puppy. The breeder had then come back to them with an increase in price to £2500. Make no mistake, these are unscrupulous puppy breeders. My recommendation is to get a price in writing, you are then entering into a contract with the breeder. Do not be afraid to walk away if they demand more money. If breeders are willing to risk their credibility in this way, you don’t want a puppy from them.

How Soon Is Too Soon To Collect Your Puppy?

Another alarming trend I am hearing about is puppies being collected too early. In the first weeks of a dog’s life, they learns so much from their mum and siblings. A puppy should never be taken from their mum until they are properly weaned and have learnt some pack structure, usually at around eight weeks.

I’ve been told by a client of a friend of theirs who collected a Pomeranian at five weeks. There is no way this pup could be ready at this age and it seems likely to me it was puppy farmed. As a result of this early separation from the mum, the puppy is not able to properly toilet itself of keep itself clean. The owners don’t want to deal with this tiny pup and are looking to rehome it as just seven weeks old.

I’ll say it again: think before you buy. Question the breeder. If you really want a dog, wait for the right time and the right breeder. Don’t rush into a decision you will soon regret.
