Nightmare Enquiries – Change Your Behaviour Or Get Rid Of Your Dog

I’ve had a week of enquiries from hell. I cannot believe how many calls I’ve had from people with major problems with the dogs, who don’t seem to realise the severity of the situation or want to make any changes to their own behaviour.

Many of these people have more than one dog. One of my first questions, after they have told me how destructive, dominating and disruptive their dogs are is: how often do you walk them? You might be amazed to know, many people only walk their dogs once a day. They are then surprised that their dogs have excess energy.

I spoke to a woman this week. To say the call went badly is an understatement – she ended up putting the phone down on me. I am the third trainer she has approached. She has XL American Bully type dogs – three of them. All the dogs are badly behaved but the youngest is highly destructive. It sounds like he’s totally wrecked the house; she sent me a list of what he had destroyed and there can’t be much left.

Speaking For The Dog

The other trainers had given her bad advice but as the call went on, I wondered whether she would even listen to good advice. I am known for being straight talking; one of the reasons for this is that I speak for the dog when they can’t. If you tell me you have three powerful dogs and only walk them once a day – and even struggle to do that – I will question whether you should have the dogs in the first place. Is it any wonder the dogs are demanding and destructive?

Having dogs is a huge responsibility. You have to put the time in. Consistency, structure and boundaries are not established overnight. Even with a mature dog, you have to keep up the work.

If you are serious about changing your behaviour to change your dog’s behaviour, give me a call. If not, there’s no point in picking up the phone.
